The deductible: probably not $1,000
Most Alabama homeowners policies written in the last few years carry a separate wind/hail deductible of 1 or 2 percent of the dwelling coverage — on a $350,000 house, $3,500 or $7,000 — that applies to any windstorm or hail claim. Your declarations page says which you have. It matters because a $5,000 repair claim on a 2 percent deductible pays you nothing; a $16,000 replacement pays $9,000.
ACV, RCV and the holdback
With replacement cost value coverage, the carrier first pays the actual cash value — replacement cost minus depreciation for the roof's age — and holds back the difference (recoverable depreciation) until the work is completed and invoiced. A 15-year-old roof might be depreciated 50 percent; you get the second half after the job. With an ACV roof endorsement — which Alabama carriers are increasingly writing onto roofs over 10 to 15 years old — you get the depreciated amount and nothing more, which can be a third of the replacement cost. Look for a 'roof surface payment schedule' on your policy before you need it.
Matching
Alabama has no statute requiring carriers to replace undamaged slopes so the roof matches, but policies generally require a 'reasonably uniform appearance,' and when the shingle is discontinued and can't be matched, that's the argument for a full replacement. It needs documentation — the manufacturer's discontinuation notice and photos of the mismatch. We build that case when it's true.
Deductible rebates are illegal
Alabama law prohibits contractors from paying, waiving, rebating or absorbing an insurance deductible, and a roofer who offers to is inflating the claim to cover it. The honest version is a complete claim — code items, decking, steep charges, gutters, all the things carriers leave out of the first scope — so the deductible is the only thing you pay.
Supplements: what the first scope misses
Adjusters use Xactimate and a checklist, and the first estimate commonly omits: ridge vent and soffit intake required by code, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, the second layer of tear-off, steep and two-story labor, decking replacement, gutters and downspouts, skylight reflashing, and permit fees. A supplement with photos and code citations gets them added. It's normal, not adversarial.
FORTIFIED and Class 4 discounts
Alabama law requires insurers to offer premium discounts for homes with a FORTIFIED designation, and most carriers also discount Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. If your claim is a full replacement, it's the moment to upgrade — the difference is a few thousand dollars, and the discount runs every year after.
Timeline and rights
Report promptly — many policies allow a year from the date of loss, some less. Alabama's Department of Insurance takes complaints when a claim stalls. You choose the contractor, not the carrier. And you don't have to sign anything at the door before you've read it.
Common questions
Will one hail claim raise my rates?
Weather claims are rated differently from liability claims and one rarely moves your premium alone, though Alabama carriers are raising rates area-wide after storm years regardless. Several claims in a few years can bring non-renewal.
My roof is 18 years old. Will they pay to replace it?
If it has covered storm damage, yes — but check whether your policy has an ACV roof schedule, which pays only the depreciated value on older roofs.
The adjuster said 'wear and tear.'
Wear isn't covered, but adjusters also miss bruising and creases. A second inspection with test squares and photos, and a request for re-inspection, is the next step. We do that.
Should I sign the roofer's contingency agreement?
Read it. A fair one says you'll hire them if the claim is approved, at the insurance-approved price, and you can cancel if it isn't. A bad one assigns your claim or locks you in regardless.
How do I get the FORTIFIED discount?
The roof has to be installed to the IBHS standard by a contractor who knows it, evaluated by a certified FORTIFIED evaluator, and the certificate sent to your carrier. We handle the first two and give you the third.
