Cost
Architectural shingles: $430–$620 per square installed in Huntsville. Standing-seam metal: $1,000–$1,600 per square. Exposed-fastener (screw-down) panels: $600–$900, but with screws that need replacing in 10 to 15 years. Metal shingles that mimic shake or slate: $850–$1,300. On a typical 24-square ranch that's roughly $11,000 for shingles versus $28,000 for standing seam.
Lifespan
A well-ventilated architectural shingle roof in North Alabama lasts 20 to 25 years; under heavy shade or with a hot attic, 15 to 18; a Class 4 shingle a few years longer. Standing seam with a Kynar finish lasts 50 years or more. Over 50 years that's two or three shingle roofs against one metal roof — which is where the up-front difference closes, if you're the one who's still there.
Hail and wind
Hail dents metal — usually cosmetically — and bruises shingles, which leak later. Many Alabama policies now exclude cosmetic hail damage on metal roofs by endorsement, so a dented standing-seam roof is often not a claim; a bruised Class 4 shingle roof usually is. A properly clipped standing-seam roof is rated for 140-mph winds and sheds debris; shingles at 130 mph with six nails are close.
Heat and energy
Light-colored metal with a reflective finish keeps the attic noticeably cooler in a Huntsville July and cuts cooling costs by 10 to 20 percent versus dark shingles. Dark metal gives up most of that. Ventilation matters more than material for either.
Noise, insurance, resale
Rain on metal over a decked, insulated attic is barely louder than on shingles — the drum sound is from open-frame barns. Some carriers discount metal, some don't, and some exclude cosmetic hail; Class 4 shingles get a reliable discount and FORTIFIED works with either. Metal is a selling point on farmhouses, custom homes and acreage, and returns a large share of its cost; in the 1990s–2000s subdivisions, many HOAs restrict it to accents.
Our recommendation
Standing seam if you'll be in the house 15-plus years, the house style suits it, and the HOA allows it — especially on acreage and custom homes. A Class 4 architectural shingle, FORTIFIED if you want the strongest asphalt roof, for everyone else. It's an excellent roof at a third the price, and the money saved buys ventilation, gutters and guards.
Common questions
Can I put metal over my shingles?
Standing seam can go over one layer on purlins or a slip sheet, but it hides rotten decking and prevents a sealed deck. We prefer to see the deck; case by case.
Does metal attract lightning?
No. Lightning hits the tallest object regardless of material; a metal roof, if struck, dissipates the charge safely and doesn't burn.
Will my insurance cover hail dents on metal?
Check for a 'cosmetic damage exclusion' endorsement — common in Alabama now. Dents that crack the finish or open seams are functional and covered.
Which is better for a rental?
Shingles, almost always. You're optimizing for cost over a holding period, not lifespan.
Will my HOA allow metal?
Many Madison and Hampton Cove HOAs don't, on the main roof. We check the covenants before quoting.
