Roofing for South Huntsville and Jones Valley

The oldest suburbs in the city — brick ranches and colonials from the space-program boom under 60-year-old oaks — where the roofs are on their third life and the chimneys are where the leaks are.

Quiet street of 1990s brick homes in south Huntsville with Monte Sano in the background

South Huntsville is the city the Arsenal built: the brick ranches and split-levels of the 1960s and '70s off Whitesburg Drive, Bailey Cove and Weatherly, the colonials of Jones Valley and Green Mountain, the streets climbing toward Monte Sano, and the neighborhoods along the Parkway to Hobbs Island Road. The roofs have been replaced two or three times; the chimneys, valleys and dormers are original; and the oaks and pines planted when the houses were new are now dropping limbs on them in every storm.

Most of our repair work in the city is here — chimney flashing, valleys under decades of leaves, boots and vents on roofs that have been patched before. Replacements on these houses often uncover decking that needs replacing and ventilation that never existed. The City of Huntsville issues permits; the mountain-side streets add steep and complex roofs. Free inspections, photographed and honest.

Questions from South Huntsville homeowners

My chimney leaks and the roof is only ten years old.

Then it's the flashing, not the roof — usually counterflashing that was surface-mounted and caulked, or no cricket behind the chimney. We rebuild it in metal cut into the mortar.

My house has had two roofs already. What should I expect this time?

A full tear-off, some decking replacement priced per sheet, new flashing everywhere, and ridge vent with soffit intake if the house has never had it. It'll be the best roof the house has had.

Can you handle a steep roof on the mountain?

Yes — roped and staged, priced accordingly, with the drone for inspection where walking isn't safe.

Do you clean valleys and gutters?

Yes, as a maintenance visit or with an annual inspection — and micro-mesh guards cut the work in half.
